Late 20th century or newer - blade possibly older.

Comments

A 20th or 21st century takouba from the Tuareg, acquired by the owner in Essaouira, Morocco.

While the mounts and leather work are familiar and consistent with modern Tuareg pieces the blade is possibly older. The lion and snake symbols engraved onto the blade are recent - but the stamps are similar to those noted by Morel and can be seen also on Takouba 28 on this site. This probably makes the blade European - although in these mounts it looks a bit cut down - possibly the tip is shorter do to sharpening over the years.

This is a good demonstration of how a relatively modern sword can still contain parts that are very much older!
