19th century - Mende people of Sierra Leone

A sword from the Mende people of Sierra Leon - demonstrating another type of African broadsword with an imported European blade. The blade is from F.W. Holler - a German maker from Solingen. The triple fullers are similar to many blades found in kaskara and takouba as is the overall profile.

The hilt is wood capped with iron. A photo of a Mende chief from the late 19th century is included in the gallery.
