Mainly located in Burkina Faso in the Volta river basin, the Mossi resisted the spread of Islam and kept animistic beliefs. They were able to control a large area of territory - commonly known as the Mossi Empire - and maintained a complex court system. Known as horsemen and often engaging in raids into the kingdoms over many centuries. A constant annoyance for the Malian Empire, the Songhai Empire and later the Hausa kingdoms.
